The wait is over: the Champions League returns on 16 September. Day 1 of the league phase kicks off with a mix of classics and tricky away games. From Arsenal’s trip to Bilbao to Juventus–Dortmund, here’s what to expect.
Most likely to win: Arsenal
Arsenal start their campaign in the Basque Country. Athletic are tough to beat at home, but with the quality and depth the Gunners now boast, the experts see them as the likely winners.
Most likely to win: PSV Eindhoven
A clash with Belgian interest. Union face PSV, who are always strong at the Philips Stadion. Union’s fearless approach makes them dangerous, but PSV are considered favourites in front of their own fans.
Most likely to win: Juventus
A heavyweight duel in Turin. Dortmund can always threaten with pace and youth, but Juventus have the experience and form on their side. ‘The Old Lady’ is tipped to edge this one.
Most likely to win: Real Madrid
The Bernabéu opens its doors for another Champions League season. Marseille arrive with ambition, but Madrid’s pedigree in this competition is unmatched. The home side are clear favourites.
Most likely to win: Benfica
On paper, one of the most one-sided fixtures of the evening. Qarabag are no pushovers in Baku, but in Lisbon they’re expected to come up short. Benfica are heavily backed to win.
Most likely to win: Tottenham Hotspur
Spurs begin their European adventure at home. Villarreal know how to frustrate bigger sides, but Tottenham’s attacking strength should be enough to secure the points in London.
