England is still on track to “bring football home”, but it’s not with the amazing football they’d hoped before the tournament. A victory against Hungary (1-3) followed by draws against Scotland and Germany (twice 1-1) were enough. The Swiss haven’t lost so far and certainly won’t feel like starting to do so now. Since then, some have called that loss, which pushed them to the third place in their group, a blessing in disguise. It was doubly lucky that, of all teams, Romania became the winner in Group E. With its decisive victory over Romania, the Netherlands has cast all doubts aside: it’s now a bona fide shadow favourite for the title. It’s not the only nation in that position. In fact, its next opponent can make the same claim with equal rights.

That’s right, Turkey is another revelation still going strong in the tournament. In its Group F, the Turks finished second, beating Georgia 3-1, losing to Portugal 0-3, and beating Czechia 1-2. In an epic round of 16 encounter that could’ve gone either way, Turkey prevailed against Austria: 1-2. Defender Demiral scored both goals, and goalie Günok made the save of the tournament in the very last seconds of the game, single-handedly denying the Austrians the hope of overtime.
