The final of the Belgian Cup, which this year will be between Union Saint-Gilloise and Royal Antwerp FC, will kick off on 9 May at 15h30 at the King Baudouin Stadium in Brussels. The question on the minds of Belgian football fans and sports bettors alike is, of course, who gets to put the coveted trophy in the air... (Images © Gvg/Photo News)
The Belgian Cup, named after and sponsored by a Belgian chips brand, has been played since 1908. The most succesful team in its history has been FC Bruges (11 times). As cited above, the 2024 edition will go ahead on Thursday 9 May (Ascension Day), starring Union Sint-Gilloise and Royal Antwerp FC.
Antwerp won the double last year. And although the Great Old is eliminated for the title, it can still defend its cup win. That won't be easy, though, especially with the negative run of six defeats in the past seven games in mind (Union beat Antwerp twice at the end of last month, 4-1 and 0-3 respectively). In short, it will take a lot of self-confidence to keep Union away from the throne.
Unlike Antwerp, Union is still in the running for both the cup and the national title. So there is a chance that the Brussels team will win the double this year - although that won't be a walk in the park.

At Union, players and fans are seriously keen to bring the cup to Duden Park. Not only because of the very hopeful performance last April, but also because this team has only won the trophy twice in Belgian football history.
Moreover, the last time dates back to... 1914, when the club became cup winners for the second year in a row. For its part, Antwerp has managed to win the cup final four times over the years, two of them very recently (in 2020 and 2023).
